Newcastle set to return for French international?
Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph has pleased Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern today after revealing that Alan Pardew has been offered assurances that he will be given funds to strengthen his depleted squad in January.
Edwards then took the opportunity to tell attentive punters that the first name on Pardew’s hitlist is one-time summer target, France left-back Mathieu Debuchy.
The summer was a frustrating one for the former Southampton boss after he was left ruing missing out on Debuchy, Dutch striker Luke de Jong and former St. James Park favourite Andy Carroll.
After failing to sufficiently strengthen during the close season, the Magpies have made a disappointing start, winning just four of their opening 15 league matches and it now appears that the club hierarchy are willing to make amends by offering Pardew the money he requires.
“This spell certainly made me question a few things that we have done,” said Pardew.
“I think it gave us a shake that we needed to do a little bit more work in the summer on recruitment and I don’t think we’re going to fall short again. We’ll be stronger in February.”
His side have been very unfortunate with injuries so far this term after losing Yohan Cabaye, Steven Taylor and Hatem Ben Arfa and haven’t had adequate squad depth to cover for these absences.
However it is not all doom and gloom and Pardew will appreciate that a decent run of form can put them back into contention for a European place and that may be made easier with some reinforcements in January.
