coloccini.jpgNewcastle United fans here at the Football Transfer Tavern have breathed a sigh of relief as the Daily Mirror claim their influential skipper is set to stay until the summer.

It has long been rumoured that Fabricio Coloccini wanted out of the club and to return home to Argentina given the nature of his ‘personal issues’ yet now the skipper has moved to reassure Magpies fans. Newcastle are of course struggling in the Premier League and have more than a couple of crunch matches coming up – namely tonight’s away fixture to Aston Villa and Coloccini’s claims to the club website will come as welcome news.

The defender told the official site that: “The last few weeks, there has been a lot of talk about my future. But I am staying here, and of course I will give 100 per cent like I always do. I have been here five years and Newcastle has given me a lot and done a lot for me. I have to be true to the club. I will give 100 per cent.”

He further elaborated, opening up and noting that: “I think everybody has problems outside of their work in life. It is difficult, but now I am here and all I have in my head is to make sure we are in the Premier League next year. That is my only objective.”

Coloccini has been at St. James’ Park since 2008 after a spell in Spanish football at Deportivo La Coruna and the shaggy haired 31-year-old has become something of a cult hero on Tyneside after he stayed for the club’s Championship winning campaign, whilst going on to put some impressive displays in on the club’s return to the Premier League.

Newcastle fans. How happy are you that Coloccini is staying? Let us know your thoughts below.
