There are slightly incredulous faces here in the Football Transfer Tavern as one of our punters dishes out the gossip from Metro – and Newcastle United fans are looking rather annoyed.
Former player Kieron Dyer has been speaking about star player Hatem Ben Arfa and noted that the Magpies could well struggle to keep hold of him.
As our punters sit back and take a sip of their pints, they settle down to hear what Dyer has to say.
The former Magpies midfielder claimed that Ben Arfa may find the lure of a more successful club difficult to resist come January.
He noted: “If Hatem plays to his capabilities then there’s no better place to play football because the fans at Newcastle are amazing,
“But most players want to play Champions League football or European football – because that’s the highest level you can be at for your club.
“If clubs come in that play in Europe then it’s going to be very hard for Newcastle to keep him.”
The French international is currently in talks with Alan Pardew and the board over a new deal – and so far the talks are going well. However, as our landlord cautions, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest in the player and that will only intensify by the time the January transfer window comes around.
Ben Arfa himself is keen to stay injury free and really show how good he can be – at both St. James’ Park and for Les Bleus.
He claimed that he could one day win the Ballon d’Or –and noted that most people think he is crazy for saying that.
As our punters note whilst finishing their pints, to do that he will have to be playing Champions League football. Something that will not be happening at Newcastle United anytime in the near future.
