Next August Is The Window That Will Suit Ancelotti Best
Former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly interested in taking left-back Ashley Cole to PSG soon, and I wouldn’t bet against him going.
Remember 2006? The then Arsenal defender claims to have nearly crashed his car when being offered £5k a week less than he expected when contract negotiations were ongoing with the Gunners. He jumped ship to Chelski and it’s not inconceivable that he’ll do the same this transfer window, with PSG willing to throw money at players like it was Monopoly money.
Cole is still able to perform superbly at the highest level and would be a huge asset at the French club who aren’t as far away at the top of Ligue 1 as their Middle-Eastern owners would have hoped. They are also foraying into the uncharted territory of the latter stages of the Champion’s League and a player with Cole’s experience would be extremely helpful.
A big issue at the Stamford Bridge club is that they only offer one-year contracts to their over-30 players. That policy saw Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack depart in the past few years and means they could lose Cole as well. PSG are in the middle of a major rebuilding and would be more than willing to offer a player of Cole’s stature a two-year contract at least.
I don’t think he’ll go during this window. Roberto Di Matteo needs his big players during his first season and I can’t see Cole jumping ship mid-season. However, with the excellent Ryan Bertrand making huge strides in his personal development, possibly in the summer a few words will be exchanged and Ashley will be looking for a new bachelor pad in the French capital.
It seems like a move that would suit everyone. PSG would get a top quality left back, Ancelotti gets a former player that he knows he can work with, Chelsea get a bit of money for a player over 30, and, most importantly for Cashley, Cole gets lots more lovely money to throw in the air laughing maniacally. Possibly.
