Old Trafford career over for Manchester United ace?
Much of the conversation in the Football Transfer Tavern today revolves around the big Champions League fixture last night and the fallout regarding Manchester United’s exit has begun. A story in the Daily Telegraph has claimed that Wayne Rooney’s time at Old Trafford may soon be up.
Rooney was of course left on the bench last night and not only did that decision cause raised eyebrows but it has also meant that speculation over Rooney’s future has increased. The player was only recently linked to Paris Saint Germain and now it seems there may be more speculation regarding the England international’s future.
United of course have four fabulous strikers at their disposal and this has not stopped them being linked to other ones – Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski to name but one. Add to this the fact that Robin van Persie’s form has been simply stunning (until recently!) and it means that Rooney has seen himself somewhat marginalised in terms of his overall influence.
In a game of the magnitude of last night, it would have been unthinkable that Rooney would be on the bench a couple of seasons ago, yet now people are more concerned with the fitness of Robin van Persie rather than that of the former Everton ace.
Fergie has of course played this speculation down previously citing Rooney’s fitness as the issue in him not starting so regularly but perhaps there is a deeper line of reasoning behind his relative fall from grace.
