Aston Villa fans have been struggling to find any sort of reason to be cheerful inside the Football Transfer Tavern, and they have been left looking into their pints in despair once more thanks to a rumour from Matt Law of the Daily Mirror.
Christian Benteke – the clubs one bright spark this season – is reportedly being kept an eye on by a host of the Premier League’s top clubs following a series of powerhouse displays this season.
The Belgian forward has managed 11 goals in a struggling side this season – some of them being absolute stunners.
Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool all have an interest in the summer, and are set to fight it out for his signature when the current campaign comes to an end.
Villa would find it especially hard to hang on to their main man should they suffer relegation to the Championship, although Lambert is desperate to hang on to the 22-year-old and build his young side around him.
The news is set to spark panic amongst Villa fans however, who have witnessed the club sell prized assets such as Gareth Barry, James Milner, Stewart Downing and Ashley Young in recent years.
They are in no danger of losing Benteke during this January transfer window with the Belgian having already featured for two clubs this season, while the player is reportedly keen to stay to help the club avoid relegation.
He is looking to repay the faith Lambert showed in him when he signed from Genk for £7.5 million in the summer, whilst his price tag is likely to have doubled after just five months in the Premier League.
