Pints have not only been placed down but spat out here at the Football Transfer Tavern such is the shock at the claims from the Daily Mirror coming from French outfit Marseille.

The paper claim that not only will the Ligue 1 club attempt to hold onto QPR loanee Joey Barton but they view him as a leader in the team. Barton’s reputation in England never really recovered from his infamous list of indiscretions, yet it seems the French club are big fans of the so-called bad boy who has made seven starts in the French top flight for the Mediterranean giants.

L’Equipe report that Barton has won the heart of sporting director Jose Angio after he claimed: “Barton was described as an animal, but he is just the opposite. He is funny, intelligent, and he fights for victory. We can see that the team has been lifted by his competitive spirit. He is now established as a leader in our group.”

He also went on to answer questions about the midfielder’s future, noting: “He is very happy here, maybe he has found the right club for him. Should he desire (to stay) it could be very good. We have a very good relationship with his club, QPR.”

Barton has become an integral cog in the Marseille line up and has even developed a French accent in his spell at the club. We’ll put it to you guys whether you think this is authentic or fake!
