Daily Mail have certainly gone to town in their assessment of Rafael Benitez and his claims of a summer departure.
Chelsea may be struggling in the league following a shock Champions League group stage exit but if you ask most Blues fans what they want in the summer they would not say to sign Radamel Falcao as their first thought but to get rid of Rafael Benitez instead. Now it seems they have their wish with the Spaniard claiming he is leaving in the summer.
What some call a passionate and frustrated press conference others have called unhinged and the breaking point for the former Liverpool manager. Some of the gems from the press conference include Benitez hitting out at the tag of ‘interim’ manager. One Chelsea fan quips that Roberto Di Matteo managed to win the Champions League with the same tag but then again as Chelsea fans have claimed all season, Rafa is not RDM.
He also damned Blues supporters as ‘fans with an agenda’ given the depreciating banners and chants that have aired around Stamford Bridge during his tenure. Whilst few of us actually felt Benitez would stay past the summer, he actually confirmed this by noting: “I’ll leave at the end of the season, so they don’t need to waste time with me.”
Given that Rafa is so keen on his facts, this seems quite a strangely timed one, given that there were only 2,000 dissenting fans who travelled to the FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough last night in which the Blues won 2-0. The fact Rafa couldn’t hear the 40,000 at the Bridge at the beginning of his reign seems strange in comparison. Perhaps Terry gave him a hearing aid as a make up present?
Whatever the case, Benitez will be out at the end of the season and in good news for the manager, on the Indeed jobs board there are still 15,006 jobs available all of which include the word interim. Three are even for waiters!
Chelsea fans. Will your depreciation of Benitez harm your sides top four chances this season? Let us know your thoughts below.
