There have been gasps of disbelief among the Football Transfer Tavern faithful today after news emerged in the Metro that Real Madrid are scheming an astonishing £45 million move to beat Chelsea to Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao.
Already wanted by the top clubs around Europe, Falcao scored an incredible five goals on Sunday to help Atletico destroy basement side Deportivo 6-0 and he has already netted a staggering 16 goals in just 14 games for the La Liga dark horses.
Premier League giants Chelsea are desperate to sign the Colombian frontman as they seek a replacement for misfiring Fernando Torres but it now appears that Real Madrid are hoping to steal a march on the European champions to capture the 26-year-old.
A move from the city rivals would cause much animosity among the two clubs who were understood to have a long-standing ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that restricts Real from poaching players from their local rivals. However it appears that Jose Mourinho is willing to go against this to secure the man he hopes will take them to his much sought-after Champions League title.
Atletico are desperate to keep the frontman at the club for at least the rest of the season but it will be hard to resist the sort of offers that the top European sides are prepared to pay to secure El Tigre
