A return to the Premier League for Cristiano Ronaldo has been mentioned quietly once or twice here in the Football Transfer Tavern, but Dermot Corrigan of ESPN has stopped by to tell us the Portuguese superstar intends to see out his current deal at Real Madrid.

Presidential speculation in the Spanish capital has meant Ronaldo’s future has been questioned, with him reportedly looking for a pay rise, or a move to big spending Paris Saint Germain or even a possible return to Manchester United.

However, in an interview with Fifa.com, Ronaldo has revealed he expects to at least see out his remaining contract which runs until 2015.

“I want to see out my contract at Real Madrid,” Ronaldo said. “I am very clear about that. After that, well, I do not know what will happen in the future.”

Ronaldo and his Real Madrid team mates have struggled to replicate the sort of form that saw them crowned La Liga champions last season, and following a goalless draw with lowly Osasuna at the weekend, any slim hope of retaining their title seems long gone.

“We have not started the championship very well, for sure,” Ronaldo said. “We know that La Liga is an uphill struggle for us now, but nothing is impossible in football. We are going to work hard, win games and see what happens. And, of course, there is the Champions League and the Copa del Rey too. There is plenty for us to win this season.”

The news will come as a welcome relief to Los Blancos fans who have excruciatingly witnessed their side slip 18 points behind arch rivals Barcelona. Ronaldo also missed out on winning the recent Ballon d’Or with Barca’s Lionel Messi claiming the coveted prize meaning it has been a season of struggle for a team used to excellence.
