English wonder-kids never come into the frame of transfer gossip very often so when 15-year-old Joe Gomez gets accredited as being ‘off the scale’, you know he’s special. With Premier League scouts keeping tabs on the youngster, Charlton Athletic are facing a struggle to keep hold of the starlet.

Having started his playing career at youth level for Charlton and looking to make the step-up to first team action, Gomez can follow the footsteps of former Addicks stars Carl Jenkinson and Jonjo Shelvey. Being a traditional centre-back, the England U16 defender starred in their recent victory over Wales and tends to have a more sophisticated technical side to his game.

Manager Chris Powell will have a tough time keeping hold of Gomez but if it’s first-team action the young player wants, he’d do well to make his mark at The Valley. In a few years time, stepping up to the Premier League will be on his agenda and will not only make him a hit in England’s best division but also on an international stage.

With the likes of Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka built in a similar mould to Joe, up and coming centre halves are exactly what England need. With Gomez looking to establish himself on a bigger stage, maybe now is the time for him to keep his head down and make a name for himself.

With the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City all watching, he’ll have every reason to impress.
