Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we always like to see the return of a former hero in the Premier League and one man we would pay good money to see gracing English pitches again is Xabi Alonso.
The Real Madrid midfielder’s current contract at the Bernabeu expires in the summer and he is understood to have rejected the latest offer on the table.
That could make him a brilliant free signing for a Premier League outfit in the summer with both his former club Liverpool and Chelsea thought to be monitoring his situation.
However suggestions from Italian newspaper Tutto Sport are that Juventus will offer strong competition for his signature as the Serie A champions line up a attractive final contract for the 31-year-old as he seeks a new chapter in his career.
Alonso’s future with the La Liga outfit appears grim following the summer arrival of Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad, who many in the tavern view as the perfect replacement for the one-time Sociedad man himself who became such a legend at Anfield.
This increased competition for places has made Alonso consider his position at the club and could be ready to walk away on a free transfer.
The midfielder returned to Spain in August 2009 after signing for Real on a £30 million transfer after a highly distinguished five years at Anfield and Reds supporters still remain hopeful that one day Xabi will back his way home to Liverpool.
