Tottenham fans were left enjoying their evening pints after Metro journalist Jamie Sanderson arrived at the Football Transfer Tavern with news that Sevilla are ready to offer long-term target Alvaro Negredo to the White Hart Lane club in a cut-price January deal.

Sanderson propped up on a bar stool to explain to punters that former manager Harry Redknapp has previously enquired about signing the 27-year-old during last summer and now Sevilla are prepared to sell him to Spurs providing they fork out the £17 million asking price.

The La Liga side are currently in the depths of a huge financial crisis and need to offload their main talents in an attempt to pay off around £15 million worth of debt. The striker demonstrated his full worth to his current side on Friday night coming off the bench to secure a 2-2 draw for his team with a stoppage time equaliser against Espanyol.

Sevilla rejected a bid thought to be around £25m from Spurs on transfer deadline day so this deal would represent value for money for Andre Villas-Boas as he seeks to build a team capable of challenging for Champions League qualification.

Do you think that Negredo is the man to fire Spurs into the Champions League? Vote in our polls below.

We don’t have a problem scoring its keeping goals out where we struggle we have no clean sheets this season. If we had a few more we would be near the top a better option is Michu.

Got enough strikers around the 30 year old mark and a few young ones to come through. Certainly not for £17 million!

If they are offering him to us at a cut price then there is something wrong, they are trying to get their own back for selling them Zakora

100%. Defoe is too inconsistent and Adebayor and Dempsey are more auxiliary strikers than out and out goalscorers – particularly in the 18. GBP 17m is about the right price for him. Top player without a doubt.
