Liverpool supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern had assumed that Inter Milan starlet Philippe Coutinho would be moving to Anfield before the transfer window closes next week.

However Daniel Jones from Metro arrives with shock news that Southampton are ready  to hijack the deal with new Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino a big fan of the talented Brazilian.

The ambitious St. Mary’s outfit are prepared to match Inter’s £10 million asking fee to land the 20-year-old with chairman Nicola Cortese eager to bring even more talented youngsters to the club, following rhe impressive capture of Gaston Ramirez from Bologna in the summer.

Liverpool were understood to be in prime position to sign Coutinho after giving up the chase for Blackpool’s Thomas Ince but Saints’ interest could now create a bidding war with the South Coast side ready to challenge the Reds all the way.

After stealing Norwegian defender Vegard Forren from under Liverpool ‘s noses, signing Coutinho could act as another coup for the Saints as they look to repair relations after the unpopular sacking of manager Nigel Adkins last week.

Coutinho is highly regarded at the San Siro but he is said to have fallen out with the club after only making 15 appearances for the Serie A side.

Can Saints pull off a coup by landing Coutinho? Rate this rumour below.

He doesn’t want to be playing in the championship next season so why would he go to Southampton.

Don’t quite think so. Saints have a great blend of players and its all attack now. Coutinho will see the big picture and go south.

You mean his career will go south if he signs for Southampton. Look at how they treated Adkins just as they were coming good. Le Tissier called it right, ego problems at the top at that club.
