Liverpool’s transfer business has already had us talking here in the Football Transfer Tavern following their signing of Daniel Sturridge, but Simon Jones of the Mail Online reckons they are set to miss out on their next transfer target.
Liverpool have reportedly bid £7 million for Italian international defender Davide Astori, but are likely to miss out on his signature with Premier League strugglers Southampton favourites to land him.
The 25-year-old is valued at £12m by his club Cagliari, and Saints boss Nigel Adkins has come closest to matching that valuation with a £9.5m bid.
Southampton are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements having conceded 37 goals in the first half of the campaign, whilst Liverpool are in the market for another centre back with Uruguayan Sebastian Coates set to go out on loan.
Astori has been capped twice at international level by the Azzurri and made a late push for Italy’s Euro 2012 squad. He also featured in his country’s 2-1 friendly defeat to England earlier in the season.
