The conversation has turned to French football inside the Football Transfer Tavern, and Charles Perrin of The Express reckons Arsene Wenger is still in with a shout of signing one of his transfer targets from Ligue 1.
Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff has been tracked by the Gunners boss for the entirety of the January transfer window, although it appeared Arsenal fans were set to be left frustrated once more following reports from Spain that the player was on the verge of signing for Atletico Madrid.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo yesterday claimed the Frenchman was open to a move to La Liga, and it was merely down to a transfer fee being agreed between the two clubs.
But later in the day, the Atletico chief executive dismissed the story as simply a rumour – news which has put Arsenal back in the picture.
Arsene Wenger has been linked with a host of players during the transfer window, but is yet to secure any signings. Arsenal fans are desperate to see their boss splash the cash, and a move for Gourcuff would be considered a step in the right direction.
French football website France Football confirmed Gourcuff turned down Atletico, meaning the Gunners face a hectic final two days of the transfer window, in which they hope to finally make some signings, with Gourcuff remaining a top target.
