Summer departure for Manchester United outcast?
It is a story that we in the Football Transfer Tavern feel may well run on and on and given the article in the Daily Mirror today about Manchester United and Wayne Rooney we may well be proven right.
Yesterday the gossip in the tavern was all about the potential move away from Old Trafford for the striker and today the story has developed somewhat. It is not only claimed that the relationship between Rooney and his manager has significantly soured this season but also Sir Alex Ferguson has been harbouring concerns over the forward’s form and fitness for some time.
It had been thought that it was only recently that Rooney’s fitness had gone off the boil ever so slightly but claims are now being made that the club have felt that the England international has been overweight all season and lacking in sharpness.
Add to this the fact that Robin van Persie has now taken over as the number one forward at Old Trafford and Rooney’s future is not as certain as it once was. The club are believed to be willing to accept offers over £20 million in the summer and the once unthinkable – Rooney leaving the club – could well become a reality.
Rooney is out of contract at the end of the 2014/15 season and given that the Red Devils will want to capitalise on any potential maximum fee, a sale now is much more likely than the player running his contract down at Old Trafford.
