There is the usual transfer talk in the Football Transfer Tavern today but the banter is interrupted by the landlord who is reading that Swansea City’s star striker Michu has signed a new contract with the club until 2016.
The Spanish sensation has taken the Premier League by storm after his bargain £2 million transfer from Rayo Vallecano and has already hit 16 goals for the Swans this season.
This has led to wide interest from Swansea’s Premier League rivals in trying to capture the 26-year-old but today’s news ensures that Michu’s future is at the Liberty Stadium for the long-term.
“It was an easy decision for me,’’ Michu told the Swans official website. “I am living a dream here at Swansea.
“I’m probably enjoying my football more than ever. It’s easy to play with this team and tonight I have the chance to reach the first final of my career.
“I’m really happy here in the city with the people, the club and the fans. Everyone has been so nice to me since I arrived.
“I think the club are happy with me because they have given me a new contract. I am certainly happy with the club.’’
Michael Laudrup will be hoping that this news is the boost his side need before tonight’s huge Carling Cup semi-final against Chelsea. The Jacks currently lead the Londoners 2-0 on aggregate following an impressive showing at Stamford Bridge with the victors set to face giantkillers Bradford City in the Wembley final.
With his future now sorted with an improved long-term deal, Michu was quick to explain how happy he is at Swansea.
He added: “I’ve read and listened to all the speculation, but it doesn’t interest me, and that’s why I’ve signed a new contract.
“I’m enjoying myself too much because the team always tries to play football. All I think about is the next game and helping Swansea be successful. This is my life.’’
