The Preview The Prediction : Newcastle v Southampton
A weakened Newcastle will travel to St Mary’s on Sunday for a 3pm kick off.
Newcastle who lost Ben Arfa and Cisse to injury in the midweek Europa League game against Maritimo will also be missing Coloccini due to his red card at Liverpool. Newcastle will also be without Shola Ameobi, Yohan Cabaye who has had surgery and will now be sidelined until January, Dan Gosling, Ryan Taylor, Haris Vukic, Xisco and youngster Adam Campbell.
Along with this Gabriel Obertan and Jonas Gutierrez are also facing late fitness tests as Newcastle battle to field a side that has any Premier League experience.
Southampton on the other hand have no new injury worries although it is likely that Richard Chaplow and Frazer Richardson will be missing due to injury. Alan Padrew returns to the ground where he was sacked after the infamous fall out with Southampton owner Nicola Cortese, despite leading them to 4th in League 1 even though they started with a 10 point deduction.
Not many at the time envisaged Alan Padrew would be seen again at St Mary’s in a Premier League fixture but the work of probably the most positive manager in England has taken them to these dizzying heights. It could be said both managers enjoyed unexpected success last season with Newcastle reaching 5th and qualifying for the Europa league and Nigel Adkins took Southampton from relegation candidates in the Championship to a Premier League team however despite all this success it seems both teams have suffered due to this success.
Newcastle lye in 12th on 14 points and Southampton lye in 19th on 8 points. Newcastle have only won 2 of their last 10 games, drawing 5 and losing 3 of them and Southampton have had a poor time as well winning 2, drawing 2 and losing 6.
Newcastle are yet to win away from home this season but Southampton have only won 1 at home all season. Southampton have the worst defensive record this season conceding 30 goals already so this game could go either way.
In all honesty I can see Southampton taking all 3 points in this clash, mainly because of Newcastle’s missing players but also the fact they have struggled away all season.
I predict a 2-1 victory for Southampton.
