For a club with an impressive recent record in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur’s youth academy has not really produced the amount of talent that it maybe should have.
In London you have Arsenal and West Ham United who are constantly producing first team players as well as Manchester United, Liverpool and even Southampton and Middlesbrough making the most of their academies along with many others elsewhere.
In the current Spurs first team you have to look fairly hard to find a complete academy graduate with the likes of Aaron Lennon, Kyle Walker, Gareth Bale and Kyle Naughton all signed from other clubs in their late teens. Jake Livermore and Steven Caulker along with current QPR loanee Andros Townsend have come through the ranks at Spurs in recent years and it just so happens that the club have a few more diamonds lurking in their academy.
With coaches such as Les Ferdinand and Tim Sherwood bringing through the younger generation of Spurs stars and also their selection to play in the NextGen competition in recent years, the future is bright for the homegrown Tottenham players.
Another local lad Ledley King is soon to be involved with the youth set up at Spurs and these role models can only enhance the impressive talent that the youngsters already possess.
