We at the Football Transfer Tavern were interested to read on Sky Sports that Real Madrid left back Fabio Coentrao has handed in a transfer request in the Spanish capital.
Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that the defender had asked for a transfer and so long term admirers Tottenham Hotspur are set to make a move for the 25 year old this week.
Real may well attempt to use the wantaway left back as bait to seal the deal to sign Welshman Gareth Bale and so may offer around £80million plus the Portuguese international to tempt Spurs.
Bale is unlikely to feature for Tottenham before the close of the transfer window due to a slight injury that ruled him out of international duty in midweek, and so Real are keen to get the deal done as soon as possible to fix any issues with a medical.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has been after a left back this summer after telling Benoit Assou-Ekotto that he is no longer needed at the club and so sticking with Danny Rose as his first and only choice in that position.
Rose is set to start today for the North London club against Crystal Palace, whereas Coentrao will not be included in Real Madrid’s squad for their league opener at home to Real Betis this evening.
Spurs may look to make a bid for the left back instead of making him part of the Bale deal but the Spanish club will not receive anywhere near the £25million that they paid for him two years ago if so.
