There are a few murmurs around the Football Transfer Tavern today that Arsene Wenger is preparing a bid for out of favour Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo in the January transfer window.

Mirror Football journalist Steve Stammers has been telling punters that the long serving Arsenal manager is concerned after his sides disappointing start to the season and realises that he needs to strengthen in the upcoming window to maintain a top four challenge.

The 25-year-old Brazilian international has been scouted by Wenger who is now ready to make a bid for the Bayern man who has fallen out with his manager Jupp Heynckes.

Wenger had hoped that Abou Diaby would be able to take on the robust tackling midfielder role in his young side but he has again been plagued with injury and instead Wenger is ready to offer £10 million to the German side for Gustavo.

It was understood that the Arsenal boss was pursuing Frank Lampard but he has been setback with news that interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez wants to keep the England international until the end of the season and is ready to repel any attempts to sign him in January.
