There has not been much to cheer about at Villa Park this season, as Paul Lambert’s young side have slipped down the Premier League table. However, one of the few positives for Villa has been the form of new signing Christian Benteke. It has emerged this week that the Belgian, who has scored four goals for the West Midlands side since arriving from Genk on transfer deadline day, has reportedly announced that wants to join Arsenal.
Both club and player have fervently denied the rumours published in The Sun that the 21-year-old is set to leave Villa for the Emirates Stadium. Yet with Villa sliding towards the relegation zone, the long term future of the Belgian international still may be subject to speculation.
Should the Villans find themselves resigned to Championship football next season, then it is very likely that Benteke will try to engineer himself a move away from Villa Park. Whether Arsenal will line up at the top of a list of potential suitors, should this become reality, remains to be seen.
Benteke has looked a promising entity so far this campaign. Pacy and strong, he would fill a void that has been missing in Arsenal’s front line for some time now, and Wenger would be wise to carefully watch the youngster over the coming season.
It is likely that Benteke will have to show a proven goalscoring record this campaign in order for Wenger to make a summer move for the Belgian, however should Villa be relegated this season it would seem rather paradoxical to make a move for a ‘proven goalscorer’ for a club that has just been demoted.
Ironically it may be that Wenger only becomes interested if Benteke’s goals manage to keep Villa in the Premier League. Then we may truly find out whether The Sun was telling the truth.
