We love a deadline day fight for a signature here at the Football Transfer Tavern, and it appears we are in line for just that according to Colin Young of the Daily Mail.
Wigan Athletic are reportedly leading the chase for Newcastle United full back Danny Simpson, although Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are also keen to sign the defender.
The former Manchester United man has been told he is free to leave St. James’ Park, after losing his place to to new £5 million France international Mathieu Debuchy in recent weeks.
Simpson has only six months left to run on his current deal, and has been unable to negotiate an extension. That mean’s The Magpies will be hoping to sell before the 11pm deadline if they are to receive any sort of fee for the 26-year-old.
The Latics are reportedly in pole position, with Simpson supposedly keen on a return to his native North West, although a switch to London would also appeal.
He is likely to cost as little as £500,000.
Meanwhile Newcastle have been busy in the transfer market again, and are set to add teenager Kevin Mbabu to their development squad. The 17-year-old Swiss midfielder will cost around £1m from Servette. Manchester United and Arsenal have both previously been credited with an interest in him.
