The Top 5 Smartest Players

We’ve recently looked at some of the most hated players, and some of the biggest divers. All this has left me with a bad taste when it comes to players these days.

But I’m determined to be optimistic, and think that no, not all footballers have to be shallow, flash, idiots. And so to celebrate those they go against the image of a modern Footballer we look at 5 of the smartest players at the moment.

Seyi has made a decent career helping out teams at the bottom end of the /top end of Championship, as he is currently doing just that with Hull, but the player is also preparing for his life after the game.

The 31 year old graduated with a BSC in Chemical Engineering from his native Nigeria, before moving to Europe to play. Still not being content with the life of a top flight footballer, Seyi also earned his masters in the same field whilst playing for Wolves.

I know it’s hard to believe at times but Frank is well known for his 150+ IQ. That’s 50 points above average, and places him in the top 1% of the country. He attracted top grades in school, including an A* in Latin. Shame all this intelligence has led to him sometimes thinking he’s smarter than the manager.

Officially (well, if you consider a game-show official) Clark is ‘Britain’s Brainiest Footballers’.

He achieved 10 A’s at GCSE and went on to study Politics and Maths at A-level.

The former QPR and Leeds man now uses this brain of his to guide other players in his role as Chairman of the Management Committee for the PFA.

Hopefully all this education will stand him in good stead off the itch, as he’s not performing that great on it, and currently finds himself on loan to ’s Northampton.

Jean Alain Boumsong

Apologies for bringing back bad memories fans. Boumsong may have been entirely useless on the field, but it appears he wasn’t so bad off it, as he holds a degree in mathematics. He can use all those number skills to calculate how many goals he was responsible for at St. James park. Now playing for Famous Greeks

Maybe not educated as such, but definitely seen as the team’s man o’ culture.

The countries former No.1 has had his own weekly column for the high-brow Guardian for several years, where he can be found discussing such weighty issues as Racism in the game, Gay footballers, and, erm, Dave Bessant.

Now finishing up his football days at Brsitol City, before retiring to become a beat poet, or post-modern wax sculpture artist, or some such.

Other Clever clogs: , Fabrice Muamba, Enoch Showunmi (A successful poet – yes, seriously) , apparently (although I’m not inclined to agree), and former NASA employee Shaka Hislop.

‘How To Become A Journeyman’ by Cameron Jerome

It appears is set to follow the fine tradition, led by the likes of Robert Earnshw and , of being a striker a bit too good for the , but not quiet good enough for the regular games.

Jerome is a new signing at Stoke, having joined in the summer for £4 million, but he has struggled to break ahead of in form Crouch in to the first team.

It appear Jerome is a man of little patience and is already plotting his summer move away. He told The Mirror “I keep saying, ‘I’ll just work harder and get on with it,’ but there comes a point where you wonder if you’ll ever get in the team.”

“I don’t know what I have to do to get a consistent run. The manager says I train well, and every time I come on I make an impact with goals or assists.

“But when it comes to the following Saturday, I don’t seem to get a game.”

He added: “I’ve not knocked on the manager’s door, but there will be a time when I get frustrated and have to sit down with him and assess things.”

Is Jerome giving up too soon, or did Pulis mishandle the matter. The Stoke dressing room has been pretty loyal in the past, but in recent months Pulis has had problems with Pennant, and Fuller (not to mention the Beattie head-butt of a few years ago).

Will any other Prem teams take a gamble on a Jerome, who has never really scored big in the Prem? I’m sure on of the promoted teams may be interested, but Stoke may be unlikely to reclaim their £4 million.

Sunderland Won’t Prize Norwich’s Holt From Poppyland!

has made it clear that will not be leaving Norwich under any circumstances, report The Sun.

Holt will have undoubtedly caught the eye of many top flight managers following his debut season in the . Holt has taken to the challenge like a duck to water, scoring seven goals and providing two assists.

The 30 year old bagged his second goal in the FA cup today to make it nine in all competitions, and send The Canaries through to the fifth round.

A true journeyman, Norwich is Holt’s tenth club. He has previously plied his trade in The , League 1, League 2 and The , as well many of ’s lower leagues. Somewhat bizarrely, he also spent a season in Singapore at Sengkang Marine, where he scored an impressive fifteen goals in seveteen games.

His rise to the top has been anything but easy. A part-time tyre fitter early in his career, Holt had to deal with the death of his father at a very young age. This acted as an inspiration for him to succeed, and great success is what he’s achieved. For the full article, read this very insightful report from The Daily Mail.

On the pitch, Holt has all the qualities a manager looks for in a good centre forward. Strong in the air, effective hold up play and a clinical finish are a few of the qualities that have served Holt and Norwich so well this term.

Possible interested parties may include . Martin O’ Neill is on the lookout for a new striker following ’s facial injury. Another club who lack firepower up front are who may be attracted to Norwich’s frontman.

It is very unlikely Paul Lambert would be willing to let his star striker leave, although if a bid of around £5 million came in, could he refuse?

Understandably lots of City fans are worrying and stressing out about whether the club will finish in the top 4 this season and realise their Champions League dream, the idea of missing out again is awful and difficult to stomach, but really things are pretty amazing right now. The majority of my life supporting City [...]
