Mundo Deportivo has proved our point. Former star of the division Juan Roman Riquelme is being lined up by Atletico Madrid – the third time the capital club have sniffed around for his services!
Should this move come off, the player would finally join the Vicente Calderon outfit after Argentinian boss Carlos Bianchi tried to snare him in 2005/06 and then a year later when he was succeeded by Mexican Javier Aguirre who too fancied making a move for the playmaker. It had seemed that the player’s relationship with the club has irrevocably broken down, yet the latest news in the Spanish press is that Riquelme is set to snub a move to Brazilian side Palmeiras in favour of a European club.
Considering his notable last spell in Europe with Villarreal, a move back to La Liga could function in Riquelme’s future plans.
This could all be mirrors and smokescreens from the player’s agent to secure a better deal with Palmeiras, yet rumours are gathering pace in the Spanish capital. Atleti are of course looking to add to their successful squad if not now then certainly in the summer given the potential high profile departure of Radamel Falcao who Diego Simeone admitted earlier this week should be appreciated while he is still at the club.
