# Newcastle United: Noel Whelan lauds Adam Armstrong sell-on clause

**Noel Whelan has lauded Newcastle United for inserting a sell-on clause in the sale of Adam Armstrong.**

### The Lowdown: Armstrong joins Southampton

Southampton confirmed the signing of Armstrong on their official [website](https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2021-08-10/announcement-adam-armstrong-transfer-southampton-blackburn-rovers) earlier this week, following the departure of Danny Ings to Aston Villa.

As per [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/aug/09/southampton-15m-offer-accepted-for-adam-armstrong-blackburn), the St. James’ Park faithful are due 40% of the profit from the sale after selling him themselves to Blackburn Rovers back in 2018.

### The Latest: Whelan on Armstrong sale

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/whelan-in-awe-of-newcastle-masterstroke-as-seven-figure-windfall-nears/), former Leeds United and Coventry City striker now pundit Whelan has been left lauding the business that the North East club did in inserting the sell-on clause when they sold Armstrong:

*“That’s a masterstroke, really.*

*“When you recognise that a young player has an immense amount of talent, even though they have not established themselves at your club, you get that clause in there.*

*“Newcastle realised that at some point Armstrong would be a big asset to another club. They’re covered their back and it has paid dividends.*

*“It’s a great bit of business for them. It is money for nothing that they can go and spend elsewhere.”*

### The Verdict: Great business

It was certainly great business by the Tyneside club to put in the sell-on clause, as it now means that they will get a fair few million from his move to the Saints.

They can now use that money to spend on bringing another player in, which helps bolster up and improve the squad ahead of the new 2021/22 Premier League season.

Steve Bruce’s team have recently been linked with moves for the likes of [Boubacar Kamara](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-transfer-rumours/boubacar-kamara-premier-league/) and [Hamza Choudhury](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-news/liam-kennedy-expecting-newcastle-united-to-ramp-up-interest-in-hamza-choudhury-transfers-rumour-arsenal-leicester-city-joe-willock-e221/), and so could use the extra money to bump up offers for them or increase their wages should they end up signing for the Magpies.
