# Antonio Valencia rejected Newcastle move in January

**Newcastle United will be desperate to ensure consistency from here on in with the opportunity to climb up the table, as they’re still at risk of slipping into relegation trouble.**

The Magpies managed to get the better of Manchester City recently, but they failed to pull off another upset today as Tottenham Hotspur secured all three points at Wembley Stadium.

Interestingly, it appears as if the Tyneside club missed out on signing an experienced defender in January, [as according to The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8324130/manchester-united-antonio-valencia-snubs-fulham-newcastle/), Antonio Valencia rejected a move to Newcastle.

Antonio Valencia [reportedly](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8324130/manchester-united-antonio-valencia-snubs-fulham-newcastle/) snubbed a deadline day move away from Old Trafford.

Indeed, the 93-cap international was being tracked by Newcastle and Fulham, but both clubs faced rejection, despite Manchester United being open to offloading him last month.

It’s safe to say that the Magpies could have done with bringing in the Ecuadorian last month, but they won’t be too disheartened as they managed to secure the services of Antonio Barreca.

### **THE VERDICT:**

Antonio Valencia has been a consistent performer at Manchester United in seasons gone by, but the introduction of Diogo Dalot and Ashley Young’s rise in form has pushed him out of the side.

The Magpies could still go in for him once his contract expires at the end of the season, so they won’t be too bothered about the January setback.
