# Arsenal: Charlie Nicholas tips Wenger return to master transfer market

**Former Gunner Charlie Nicholas has made a rather intriguing suggestion to aid Arsenal’s current struggles in the transfer market.**

Arsenal have only brought in [one signing](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-arsenal/transfers/verein/11/saison_id/2019) since the end of last season, and with the club no longer in the Champions League and being unable to finish in the [Premier League’s top four](https://www.arsenal.com/first-team/tables?season=5895), Nicholas believes he has a radical solution should The Gunners fall behind by not attracting top targets.

Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast (via [The Daily Express](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1154580/Arsenal-transfer-news-Arsene-Wenger-Unai-Emery-Charlie-Nicholas)), he said: “It’s not just because I’m trying to be controversial but Arsene Wenger has been out of a job for a long time.

“I would have simply have said: ‘Well, why don’t you go after Arsene Wenger?’.

“If Arsene Wenger sits in a room with these different players that we are trying to attract, if he’s sitting in a room representing Arsenal Football Club, I think we’d get more of a say and more a feel that they can generally attract these players.”

Wenger has not worked in football since [leaving Arsenal](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43834283) just over a year ago after 22 years at the helm.

However, Nicholas’ suggested new role for the 69-year-old would be a more behind-the-scenes position for the former Arsenal boss, and with Wenger having previous as the manager, his performance in such a role could be profitable for the club.

Only recently in an exclusive interview with [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/we-had-a-deal-ex-arsenal-transfer-fixer-law-on-sanchez-u/16arlvo52ub131jlfxtvvq47by) did former Arsenal transfer negotiator Dick Law note of Arsene Wenger’s pulling power when it comes to deals – particularly in persuading [Alexis Sanchez](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/28177987) to join The Gunners from Barcelona back in 2014.

So if Wenger was to put more of his efforts into such exploits – and link up with former player [Edu](https://www.arsenal.com/news/edu-named-our-technical-director) in the process – perhaps there is something in Nicholas’ slightly unorthodox method of improving Arsenal’s standing in transfer negotiations.
