# Arsenal: Fans bemoan potential transfer of Dries Mertens

**Arsenal fans have been bemoaning a potential transfer of Dries Mertens after the club were linked with a move for the Napoli attacker.**

According to Gianluca Di Marzio [(via @afcstuff)](https://twitter.com/afcstuff/status/1217545041436205056), the Gunners have made an initial approach for the Belgian over a free transfer in the summer transfer window. The move comes amid a potential reshuffle in the side’s attack with Alexandre Lacazette having been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid [(via Marca)](https://www.marca.com/futbol/atletico/2020/01/13/5e1ca21b22601d112c8b466b.html). Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reportedly told Mikel Arteta he wants to leave the club [(via The Times)](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pierre-emerick-aubameyang-demands-arsenal-exit-so-he-can-win-trophies-8w35bw23z?wgu=270525_54264_15791804413924_3a7b4c4b0c&wgexpiry=1586956441&utm_source=planit&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_content=22278).

One fan made his feelings on the Belgium international crystal clear:

Mertens has endured a tough season in Serie A this year, having scored just four goals in 16 league games. However, he has enjoyed a far greater time in the Champions League, scoring five goals across six group games as the Italian side qualified for the knockout stages [(via Transfermarkt)](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dries-mertens/leistungsdaten/spieler/56416).

In comparison to Mikel Arteta’s striking duo, [Mertens](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/23100/Show/Dries-Mertens) averages more shots per game in the league than both [Lacazette and Aubameyang](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/13/Show/England-Arsenal). However, fans were left scratching their heads over a potential move for the player as they took to Twitter to react to the report. Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

> He’s gonna be 33 by then though 🤔 I find that hard to believe to be honest. His wage demands would be up there, and he’s unproven in the PL
