# Arsenal: Fans laud Merih Demiral after goal line clearance in Turkey’s draw with Iceland

**Arsenal fans are lauding Merih Demiral after the Turkey international defender made a brilliant goalline clearance to help his nation qualify for next year’s European Championships.**

After an Iceland player had headed the ball goalwards, the defender fell back on to his goalline to clear the ball from underneath his own crossbar [(via Engin Davran)](https://twitter.com/Davranengin/status/1195049877383917574).

The Gunners have been linked with a £34m move for the defender with Maurizio Sarri keen to do some ‘de-cluttering’ in the January transfer window [(reports via The Guardian)](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/nov/14/football-transfer-rumours-arsenal-to-sign-34m-defender-merih-demiral) and Dean Jones of Bleacher Report has also recently [talked](https://twitter.com/DeanJonesBR/status/1194638944274657280) about their interest.

Demiral has seen a real lack of action under Sarri since joining the club in the summer for [€18m](https://en.as.com/en/2019/07/06/football/1562405040_000104.html) (roughly £15.4m). He has made just one Serie A appearance and hasn’t even featured in the Champions League at all for the Italian club [(via Transfermarkt)](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/merih-demiral/leistungsdaten/spieler/340879).

Meanwhile, Arsenal have already conceded 17 goals from their first 12 Premier League games of the season, showing their lack of stability at the back [(via Premier League)](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/goals_conceded?se=274).

It seems fans were very impressed with the clip of Demiral as they took to Twitter to laud the young Turk.

Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

> If we’re a serious club about finishing top 4, then on the 1st January we need to be signing Merih Demiral for the 34m that Juve want. He is a beast and is EXACTLY what we need at the back.
