# Arsenal: Fans overjoyed after Joe Willock signs new long-term contract

**Arsenal fans are overjoyed after youngster Joe Willock signed a new four-year contract at the club, keeping him until 2023.**

The 20-year-old has recently broken into the Gunners’ senior squad, starting three of the club’s four Premier League games so far this season, including the trip to Anfield [(via WhoScored)](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/342563/Show/Joe-Willock).

The youngster has come a long way with the north London giants, first joining the club at the mere age of four [(via Arsenal)](https://www.arsenal.com/news/joe-willock-signs-new-contract).

In total he has made 20 first-team [appearances](https://transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-willock/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/340329/plus/0?saison=&verein=11&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=), scoring three goals, including a brace in a 3-0 win over [Blackpool](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46707004) in the FA Cup third round last season.

Willock has been heaped with praise this season, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright saying he could replace the error-prone Granit Xhaka in midfield [(via Goal)](https://www.goal.com/en/news/arsenal-icon-warns-error-prone-xhaka-that-willock-is-gunning-for-/1djlou5f6lt341ptawye4ygdpm).

Arsenal fans took to Twitter to express their delight after the young midfielder signed a new long-term contract, with one fan even calling him the next Abou Diaby, who was a [huge prospect](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/8509046/arsenal-diaby-retirement-football-injury/) when he joined from Auxerre in 2006 and former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger even [touted the midfielder](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/8509046/arsenal-diaby-retirement-football-injury/) as the next Patrick Vieira, but [injuries let him down](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/8509046/arsenal-diaby-retirement-football-injury/).
