[According to Spain’s Goal](https://www.goal.com/es/noticias/arsenal-y-everton-estrechan-el-cerco-sobre-marcelino-garcia/5yr0j4kuhomw1mb6n1gakaops), the north London side have contacted the manager over their vacant head coach role.

The 54-year-old is reported to have rejected the advances of fellow Premier League club [Everton](https://www.goal.com/es/noticias/arsenal-y-everton-estrechan-el-cerco-sobre-marcelino-garcia/5yr0j4kuhomw1mb6n1gakaops), leaving the north London side as front runners.

Marcelino was the coach when Valencia were swept aside by the Gunners in last season’s Europa League semi-finals.

Despite his sacking, the Spaniard proved to be a success at the club as he qualified for the Champions League and ended their 11-year trophy drought when they beat Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final last campaign.

He was sacked by Spanish side Valencia at the start of the season after reports of a rift with the club’s owner Peter Lim [(via AS)](https://en.as.com/en/2019/09/13/football/1568377512_483757.html).

Despite his success, fans weren’t too happy after being linked with the coach as they took to Twitter to react.

Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

> Rather give Freddie Ljungberg a 10 year contract than hire Marcelino.

> Of all the coaches in the world, how have Arsenal ended up with Marcelino at the top of their managers list? A guy that has been sacked by every decent club he has ever managed, awful winning % and terrible defensive record.
