Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has been discussing the Gunners and he believes that centre-back duo David Luiz and Sokratis have improved under Mikel Arteta.
Many have criticised the whole of Arsenal’s defence this season, mainly when Unai Emery was in charge, and it is not a shock to see that they have only kept seven clean sheets in 28 games whilst also conceding 36 goals, per Premier League.
However, Sagna believes there are slight improvements and that, given time, Arteta could strengthen the defence. He said to Premier League Productions [via Metro]: “I believe Sokratis and David Luiz are really good players.
“I don’t know if they have been under pressure because we kept talking about them and after committing quite a few mistakes they were on the radar. But since Mikel came I think they are more solid and more complimentary together.
“Arsenal doesn’t concede many goals either so I can tell that there is an improvement. I’ve seen Luiz might be going at the end of the season but it would be a great thing for me to see him playing another season, a full season, under Mikel. I think Mikel just needs time to settle the defence and make them stronger.”
If you look at the fixtures under Arteta, it is hard to disagree with Sagna as they have kept four out of their seven clean sheets in the division since he took over in December, whilst they have only conceded 10 goals in the league since his arrival.
It looks like he was getting somewhere with the defence before football was postponed and hopefully Arsenal can continue in this vein.
Since taking the managerial role at the Emirates Stadium, Arteta has overseen some improvements as there seems to be a better atmosphere around the club whilst they have improved on their league position, per BBC Sport.
