Supporters of Arsenal will likely want to see some new players signed this summer, but it is also important to tie existing players down to new contracts, and highly-rated youngster Bukayo Saka seems close to agreeing a new deal at the club.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the youngster has been negotiating a new deal with the Gunners and is close to committing his long-term future to the club.
Ornstein wrote in the The Athletic, via GiveMeSport: “They nearly had an agreement before shutdown. So that came at a really bad time for Arsenal in that sense. It’s close but until pen hits paper you never know. The will of all sides is to extend. But the deal has to be right. There is plenty of interest in Saka from other clubs, too.”
Saka has thoroughly impressed fans and pundits with his performances since emerging onto the scene this season, and many of these appearances have been out of position as he has filled in at left-back whilst Kieran Tierney has been injured.
The Englishman, who prefers playing on the wing, has featured 30 times in all competitions including the Europa League, making on average 1.6 tackles and 1.1 key passes a game, per WhoScored, whilst scoring three goals and registering nine assists. This is impressive for an 18-year-old who has often not been in his favoured position. Even from defence he has managed to show some attacking threat and this clearly has impressed manager Mikel Arteta as the club has offered him a new deal.
There certainly seems to be massive potential in the young star and the fact that, on the return of the Premier League, Arteta fancied Saka in his favoured position over £72m signing Pepe says a lot about how highly rated he is, and it is great news that he is set to sign a new contract at the club.
