Arsenal: Dean Jones reacts to Gabriel Martinelli interest -Arsenal News

Arsenal will tell clubs Gabriel Martinelli is not up for sale amid transfer interest in the winger, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Contract situation

The Brazil international is currently under a £70,000-a-week contract at the Emirates until the summer of 2024, and the Gunners also have the option of extending this by a further 12 months.

As per the Daily Mail, the north London outfit have opened talks with the 21-year-old over an improved deal, in hope of securing the youngster’s long-term future with the club. However, Martinelli is said to want around £200,000-a-week if he is going to sign an extension.

This comes amid reports of Chelsea’s interest in luring the attacker away from the Emirates, with the player currently on Graham Potter’s radar.

The Latest: No chance

Jones does not believe Chelsea have a chance of signing Martinelli, with the most likely outcome being he extends his deal with Arsenal.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist said:

“Martinelli is very important to the growth of the club as well as the team. And while there is various interest from various places at the moment, I think they would just firmly tell people that he’s not for sale.”

Are Arsenal serious title challengers?

The Verdict: Huge talent

Holding statistical likeness to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman, Martinelli’s abilities are clear to see.

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the winger ranks in the 93rd percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area and in the top 20 percent for non-penalty expected goals, implying his end product is only going to get better.

Will Arsenal sign a new winger in January?

Hailed by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as an ‘outstanding’ footballer, it is very unlikely the Gunners let Martinelli leave to join a major rival, so they should do all they can to get him to extend his contract with the club.
