Arsenal supporters had a great weekend as they managed to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals to set up a final against Chelsea on Saturday week.
It was a great performance from the Gunners and not only did they win but they also kept a clean sheet against a side who have scored 93 goals in the Premier League this season, per SofaScore, which is the most in the division.
A lot of players put in great performances, including captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored both the goals, although Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was full of praise for one player in particular – David Luiz.
Are you happy with Luiz staying at the club?
Writing in his article for the Daily Mail, Redknapp said of the Brazilian: “He’s a box-office footballer and when he is having a good day, you’d be hard pressed finding a better defender. Without him on Saturday, Arsenal would not have kept a clean sheet against Manchester City and made it to the FA Cup final.
“Kudos to Mikel Arteta, because I credit his choice of system with bringing the best out of Luiz. It plays to the Brazilian’s strengths, just as it did when Antonio Conte’s Chelsea won the Premier League title using 3-4-3 in 2016-17.
“Luiz is given protection by the players on either side. He isn’t tied down to marking a single striker. He has the freedom to act as a sweeper, sending piercing passes forward.
“It doesn’t surprise me the way he bounced back from his performance in that 3-0 loss to City a month ago, when his mistake led to the opener, then he gave away a penalty and was shown a red card.”
It is hard to disagree with Redknapp here – after Luiz’s horrendous display in the Premier League against City in June, many thought it would be the beginning of the end for his career at the Emirates Stadium. However, the Brazilian picked up the best SofaScore rating of any Arsenal player at Wembley (8.1) and managed to keep City quiet by making 11 clearances and four interceptions, and winning all of his four aerial duels as well as two of his three ground duels, per SofaScore.
This highlights that Arteta is now getting the best out of him in the new formation like Redknapp says, and Gunners fans will be hoping that Luiz can keep up these good performances for their last two Premier League games and the FA Cup final.
If they do lift the trophy, then the defender, who is valued at £10.8m on Transfermarkt, will be a huge reason for the side winning the competition due to his performance against Manchester City at the weekend.
