Arsenal have now agreed a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Arsenal targeting midfielder

The Gunners have been looking to strengthen in the centre of midfield during the January transfer window, with The Times reporting that they are considering a third bid of £75m for Moises Caicedo.

Youri Tielemans and Martin Zubimendi have also been considered as new additions in the engine room, but the latter is unwilling to leave current club Real Sociedad this month, and Mikel Arteta is now believed to have clinched a deal for the Chelsea ace.

The Latest: Jorginho deal close

Shortly before 10am, Romano took to Twitter to share a significant development in Arsenal's pursuit of Jorginho, who is set to move across London and has a medical "booked".

He tweeted: "Jorginho to Arsenal, here we go! Deal agreed on £12m fee, Chelsea accept conditions and documents are being prepared #AFC

"Personal terms agreed, contract until 2024 with option further year. First contact revealed yesterday night — medical booked. Arteta, key factor."

The Verdict: Caicedo still needed

The Italian has undeniable quality, being described as 'world class' by former Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique earlier this season, and he would have a lot to offer Arsenal, mainly specialising in his ability to pick out his teammates.

Over the past year, the Chelsea maestro has attempted 71.83 passes per 90, placing in the 94th percentile compared to other midfielders, completing 88.3% of these. His defensive acumen has also been exhibited, ranking in the 88th percentile for tackles completed per 90.

However, given that Jorginho is now 31, he is likely to only have a few more years at best playing at the top level, so he would not be a long-term solution for Arteta in midfield. Therefore, securing a deal for Caicedo should still be a priority today, given that he is ten years younger.
