Arsenal have made contact to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this month, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Potential cut-price deal?

The Gunners have introduced Eddie Nketiah to the first team to temporarily take the place of the injured Gabriel Jesus, but Mikel Arteta could still do with a more senior attacking addition.

The Dutchman will be out of contract at Camp Nou at the end of the season, meaning that he could be available on a cut-price deal this month, and there are two clubs in particular who are interested in bringing him to the Premier League.

The Latest: Arsenal submit Depay enquiry

According to Spanish outlet Sport (via The Sun), Arsenal and Manchester United are ‘interested’ in a deal for Depay and have both ‘sounded out’ his representatives to ‘discuss a potential move’.

Blaugrana chiefs are said to have ‘scheduled’ a meeting to decide the future of the 28-year-old later this month, and they will only allow him to leave should they ‘receive a transfer fee’.

The Verdict: Don’t do it…

Although Depay has previously been dubbed an ‘outrageous talent’ by Jacek Kulig, Edu should avoid pursuing him any further.

The Dutchman has only made two league starts this season, having fallen out of favour under Xavi at Barcelona, so he would likely need time to get up to full speed, which isn’t ideal for Arteta as Arsenal chase down the Premier League title.

The Gunners need to sign a player who is in form and ready to go, and Depay hasn’t proven himself to be an upgrade on any of the club’s current attacking options.
