It looks like the injury to Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi is worse than expected as Mikel Arteta gave an update on the player following the Watford game on Sunday.
Speaking via Goal about the injury, the manager said: “It looks really nasty. He pulled the tendon off the bone in his hamstring and that’s normally a lot of weeks.”
He was then asked if it would mean that Mustafi would miss the start of next season, to which he said: “Yes, he will.”
This is very bad news for the Gunners as Mustafi, who is valued at £10.80 million on Transfermarkt, has been involved in the starting eleven a lot since football returned and Arteta has favoured a formation which uses three central defenders. He played in seven of the eight league games before injury, and helped the side to three victories, one draw, whilst also keeping three clean sheets, per Transfermarkt.
With defenders Pablo Mari and Callum Chambers also injured, this leaves the club with four fit centre-backs including Sead Kolasinac and therefore it is a position that Arsenal will definitely need to focus on in the transfer window.
They only managed 10 clean sheets this season in the Premier League, and if they want to push further up the division next year and finish in a European spot, they will have to stop leaking goals at the back and this adds to the lists of reasons as to why the club need to be looking for another defender in the window.
Arteta seems to know this, as in the interview he went on to say, “I mentioned three central defenders that are not available and we haven’t had [two of them] them available for a long time during the season. We will have to address that.”
