Arsenal open contract discussions with midfield talisman

Arsenal have entered discussions with Thomas Partey’s representatives over fresh terms at the club, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Ghana international’s current deal is set to expire this summer, with the likes of Barcelona and former club Atletico Madrid said to be keen admirers of the player.
No agreement has been struck yet, with the player said to be happy at the club and with life in London. Romano confirmed that Mikel Arteta is keen on keeping the player who has been a stalwart in the Arsenal engine room since joining from Atletico in 2020.
Partey’s injury record
A new deal for Partey can be seen as quite a significant show of faith, as the player has had his fair share of injuries. He only made 14 Premier League appearances last season, with many fans voicing their frustrations over the player’s availability.
He has, in fact, missed 39 total Premier League games due to various injury concerns during his time with the club, drawing questions from some about his long-term future.
The 31 year old’s performances this season could go a long way in dispelling these doubts though, as the holding midfielder has proved his importance to the side. He has appeared in 31 Premier League matches, protecting the backline and accelerating the transition by breaking the lines with his passing. He has even popped up 6 goal contributions (4 goals, 2 assists) from his deep lying role.
Partey set for new Arsenal contract
With reports of Arsenal’s reportedly imminent capture of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, rumours began to swirl about Partey’s future. The same can be said for fellow veteran midfielder Jorginho, whose contract is also set to expire and is expected to leave the club.
Links to other midfield targets outside of Zubimendi, such as Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, started to circulate with Arsenal said to be possibly on the lookout for multiple midfield reinforcements.
Partey’s new contract should cool any further rumours, with Arteta looking keep the core of his side together to springboard another attack on the title.
