Arsenal quickly put the North London derby loss behind them, as since that defeat they have managed to beat Premier League champions Liverpool and Manchester City in the last week.
The 2-0 victory against City was huge as it meant they are now in an FA Cup final and face London rivals Chelsea. Many Arsenal stars put in a great performance in this fixture, but someone who has been consistently performing since his involvement in the starting eleven is Emiliano Martinez.
They say good things come to those who wait, and this is definitely the case for the Argentinian goalkeeper. Indeed before this season, the 27 year-old had only made six appearances in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt, despite the fact that he has been at the club for ten years.
Bernd Leno’s injury gave him a chance to prove himself, and Tony Cascarino has praised the player. Writing for The Times, via talkSPORT, he said: “It is like driving a car through a tight passage — you have to know the width of the vehicle or you will be in trouble.
“Emiliano Martínez at Arsenal looks to me like a keeper who knows where his posts are, and that transmits a sense of calm to the defenders around him.”
Who deserves to be the number one goalkeeper at Arsenal?
It’s hard to disagree with the talkSPORT pundit here, Martinez has been excelling in the seven games he has played in the Premier League since football returned. He has kept three clean sheets, only conceded six goals, and made 28 saves. He then managed another clean sheet against City in the FA Cup semi-final, and picked up a 7.3 rating, via SofaScore.
The keeper is clearly taking his chances well at the North London side, and following saves like the one he made against Liverpool, the Argentinian could even be staking a claim to keep the goalkeeping spot in the starting eleven when Leno returns.
