It looks like an academy star at Arsenal will be getting some experience in the English Football League amid reports of a loan move being agreed.
The Evening Standard reported that Zech Medley will be heading out on loan to Gillingham after agreeing a move to the League One outfit for the duration of the 2020/21 season.
Medley has racked up plenty of appearances for the Gunners in their youth ranks, playing 68 times for the under-23 and under-18 sides, picking up five goals and one assist along the way, per Transfermarkt.
However, at the age of 20, the defender needs to be getting more experience in professional football, and so a move to League One seems like a great option for the Englishman, who has made three senior appearances for Arsenal, including two in the Europa League.
Hopefully Medley will start consistently for Gillingham and can start to grow as a player and reach the potential that saw Arsenal take him from Chelsea’s academy in the first place. Mikel Arteta can then see next season whether he is ready for the step-up to the Premier League if he shines in the third tier.
The move is good for all parties, as it gives Gillingham more quality in their squad, whilst Medley should get plenty of senior experience and the Gunners can see how he copes in the division before deciding whether he is ready for first team integration.
