Arsenal: Ivan Fresneda deal not as close as is being reported -Arsenal News

Journalist Jacque Talbot says that an Arsenal deal for Real Valladolid right-back Ivan Fresneda is not as close as is currently being reported.

The Lowdown: ‘Practically closed’

Reports from Spain emerged this morning that Arsenal have ‘practically closed’ a deal for Fresneda, and that Mikel Arteta has ‘personally convinced’ him to join.

It is even claimed that he will take a flight to London ‘in the coming days’, and that the only thing to be made clear is whether he will join immediately, or be loaned back to Valladolid for the rest of the season, after Real Madrid stalled on a deal.

The Latest: Not as close…

Taking to Twitter, Talbot has since shared that the reports from Spain of Fresneda being close to joining the Gunners are ‘unfounded’:

“Hear from those close to Ivan Fresneda that reports from Spain suggesting that Arsenal have all but closed the deal and Mikel Arteta called the player personally to convince him as Real Madrid stalled are unfounded.”

Journalist Luca Bendoni has also added that Fresneda’s agent is due back in London ‘next week’, suggesting that no deal is imminent.

The Verdict: Patience needed

Patience is needed from Gunners supporters with regards to a potential deal for Fresneda, given that they have moved quickly in the last few days to finalise moves for Leandro Trossard and and Jakub Kiwior.

Lauded as a ‘remarkably complete right-back‘ by Matt Clark of La Liga Lowdown, Fresneda ranks in the 99th percentile for tackles, 95th for clearances and 91st for interceptions per match of all his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues over the last year (FBRef), and has been hailed for his ‘beastly‘ ability to maraud forward and put in crosses by journalist and La Liga presenter Juan Arroita.

31-year-old Cedric has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium this month, and so 18-year-old Fresneda would be a perfect long-term replacement for him, but fans may have to hold their horses for the next few days at least.
