Transfer insider Dean Jones expects Arsenal to go again for Palmeiras defensive midfielder Danilo in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bid made

It was reported that Mikel Arteta's side made a £20m bid for the 21-year-old late on in the summer market, which was knocked back by Palmeiras.

They also had three bids rejected by Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz on transfer deadline day, duly failing in their pursuit of a defensive midfielder.

The Latest: January move?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has claimed that Arsenal are expected to maintain their interest in Danilo and could make another move for him in January.

The journalist stated: “I think we can expect Arsenal to maintain their interest in Danilo, who they had set as a top tier target heading into the summer window.

“There was a temptation to try for him because of their situation but he’s a young player in Brazil and they are content that they will lead the way for him next year anyway.”

The Verdict: Get it done

Considering the injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, Arsenal are in desperate need of some defensive midfield cover, and January provides the optimum time to go back in for Danilo.

The 21-year-old is vastly experienced for his age, playing 129 times for Palmeiras over the last three years, scoring 12 goals and supplying nine assists (Transfermarkt).

He would also fit in nicely with the growing Brazilian contingent at the Emirates Stadium as the Gunners signed Gabriel Jesus and Marquinhos this summer to add to Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli.

Nonetheless, having failed with three bids for Luiz, Danilo could prove to be a slightly cheaper alternative for Arsenal if the price is right.
