Arsenal are eyeing a move for Barcelona forward and World Cup-bound ace Memphis Depay, according to reports from Spain.

The Lowdown: Edu transfer plans...

The Gunners and sporting director Edu are reportedly planning to strengthen Mikel Arteta's options behind the scenes, even despite their high-flying status.

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League, even above champions Manchester City, having conceded the joint-fewest goals against whilst losing just once in 14 matches.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Arteta doesn't exactly need an injection of quality, and any major signings could even disrupt the harmony of this in-form squad.

Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped Arsenal from allegedly 'working' on moves for the likes of Marcus Thuram, with a new report suggesting they're also targeting Depay.

The Latest: Arsenal eyeing Depay...

According to Spanish reports, the north Londoners, Chelsea and Manchester United all hold an interest in the Netherlands international amid his call-up for Qatar 2022.

It is claimed that all three clubs are holding off on moving any further for Depay at this stage as they seek to evaluate his performances at the World Cup.

His current deal is set to expire in 2023 and Barcelona would ideally like to sell in January, but noises from the player's camp indicate that he will wait to become a free agent.

The Verdict: Good move?

Arsene Wenger has previously stated that he likes Depay, and it's clear why when evaluating the Dutchman's statistics.

As per WhoScored, while the £159,000-per-week winger has barely featured this season because of injury, he did rank in Barca's top four performers over 2021/22.

He scored 12 goals and suppled two assists in La Liga last term whilst registering their joint-second highest number of attempts at goal per 90.

If Arsenal can sign him for a cut-price fee in the winter, or for nothing later in 2023, either move could be seen as a good one for the Gunners, given Depay's evident qualities.
