It has been no secret that Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles is willing to leave the club to play regular first team football, having been linked with Brighton recently, as per The Mirror.
However, there has now been reported transfer interest from one of the Gunners’ London rivals in the 22-year-old.
According to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham are going to attempt an ‘audacious swoop’ for Maitland-Niles. The 22-year-old’s future at the Emirates Stadium is still unclear as Mikel Arteta wants to keep him, but the board at the Gunners have indicated that they will listen to offers for the player.
Maitland-Niles brings a lot of versatility to the squad as he played in multiple positions including right-back, centre-midfield and left midfield last season. He only made 15 league starts last term so clearly he is not seen as an essential first team player, although it highlights that he is trusted by Arteta to be called up to the starting XI if needed.
The 22-year-old provides an ideal backup option at the Emirates and, if the Gunners want to be battling for a top six finish next season, then they need to retain valuable and versatile squad options like Maitland-Niles rather than dispensing with them.
Furthermore, selling him to their north London rivals, with whom they battled for a Europa League place last season, would surely antagonise the fan base.
