Many have been debating who will start in goal for Arsenal next season as Bernd Leno is available for selection after recovering from injury whilst Emiliano Martinez performed very well as a replacement. However it looks like Mikel Arteta might not have this selection dilemma to deal with as a club have made a big offer for the Argentinian.
According to journalist for the Athletic Gregg Evans, fellow Premier League side Aston Villa have made a second bid for Martinez after their first was rejected.
The offer is believed to be much closer to Arsenal’s £20 million asking price and we will find out over the next few days if the Gunners and Martinez accept the deal.
During this transfer window, Martinez has come out and said that he wants to be playing consistently, and if he isn’t then he would like to move on and this is understandable as he performed very well during the latter part of last season. He kept three clean sheets whilst conceding just nine goals. He has also made 38 saves in these matches, per Premier League, including the great one against Liverpool.
However this new bid from Villa for the player could be very tempting as the Gunners do have a good first choice goalkeeper in Leno who has made 62 Premier League appearances for the club, kept 13 clean sheets and made 218 saves. Therefore the fact they know they have a good goalkeeper in Leno combined with the fact that a bid close to £20 million has been made for their typical second choice goalkeeper could see them allow Martinez to depart and it would be some great business for the club.
They signed him for £1.35 million so could be making a lot of profit, and with this money, they could find it easier to sign transfer targets like Thomas Partey, who the club are desperate to acquire.
