Mikel Arteta has been using a lot of youth since he has become manager at Arsenal, and the latest reports suggest that he wants to add more potential world class quality to the squad.
According to Record, via Football.London, the Gunners are interested in 17 year-old winger Joelson Fernandes, but they aren’t the only club interested as some of Europe’s top sides are also keeping tabs on the player including Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
The Gunners seem to have enjoyed what they have seen of the teenager so far are as they are already wanting to make an offer for his services.
So far, Fernandes has only been involved in the youth setup at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, but he is clearly raising heads as he has made 28 appearances, scoring five goals and picking up two assists, per Transfermarkt. The goal contribution tally isn’t as high as supporters might want but the potential is there to see, he knows where the net is and Gunners fans will have to remember that he is a 17 year-old already playing in the U23’s.
His performances are not going unnoticed by his national side Portugal either as he has slowly progressed into the U17 side where he has played three times and scored one goal, per Transfermarkt.
He is a left winger, and it is very interesting that the Gunners are wanting him as he could be seen as a long-term replacement for captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who came to Arsenal as a striker, but is seen more as a left winger at the club at the moment. Now with the captain 31 years-old and his contract expiring next year, Fernandes, who Goal have tipped to follow in Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps, could be the man to replace him in the future.
