Arsenal seem to want a defensive midfielder quite badly as they have been trying to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid for most of the transfer window. However it looks like they have other options and might have to make an offer for one of them soon as an alternative.
According to Foot Mercato (via The Daily Mail), Arsenal want to strengthen their squad are are keen on Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare. It is not the first time that they have looked to raid the Ligue 1 club, with Nicolas Pepe joining from Les Dogues last summer whilst Gabriel Magalhaes looks set to make the same switch shortly.
But it will not be easy for them as they face competition from fellow Premier League side Manchester United.
The 21 year-old, who is valued at £22.05 million, per Transfermarkt, was a product of the academy at Paris Saint-Germain, but since moving to Lille, he has finally been given his opportunity to prove himself at the top level.
He has now made 70 appearances for the club, scoring one goal, but he is more of a defensive player, and therefore looks like an alternative option to Partey.
He is still very young, so has a lot of potential, but if you compare him to Partey, it shows that the possible alternative transfer is definitely not performing to the level of the Atletico star yet. The La Liga midfielder averages more tackles (2 to 1), interceptions (1.4 to 0.8) and clearances per game (1.1 to 0.4), via WhoScored and therefore if the Gunners do want a solid defensive midfielder who is good at breaking up opposition attacks then they should still be looking at Partey.
It might be harder to sign him, but there is no rush currently for the Gunners so they should not make any risky signings too quickly.
